Gunpowder, Treason & Plot

Remember, remember the 5th of November, gunpowder, treason and plot!

Bonfire Night is one of my favourite nights, I love getting wrapped up all toasty in a big coat, hat and gloves and playing with sparklers and eating yummy food!

The Milestone Early Bird Menu - Sheffield
Yesterday was no exception, my sister and I headed to The Milestone for a pre-bonfire feed to sample their early bird menu. I've wanted to go there for ages after watching one of Sheffield's local restaurants appear on the infamous Gordon Ramsay's Best Restaurant but never got round to it. It was a happy accident yesterday to stumble upon The Milestone's early bird menu, available from 5-7pm with lots of delights to choose from and complimentary glass of wine or real ale.

(L-R) Fish Pie with seasonal veg; Tea cup candlelight; The Milestone menu; Parnsip Soup

We both opted for the parsnip soup which was served in a lopsided quirky bowl (was tempted to shove it in my bag) and freshly made bread which was perfectly spongey. I then had their Fish Pie with vegetables for main, and my sister had the sausages and mustard mash with buttered carrots.

Sausages with Mustard Mash

I couldn't fault it, although I had kind of wished that I'd gone for one or the other creamy dish, and then I could've got away with a pudding! The house wine was lovely and the whole bill only came to £30. Bargain!

It was really busy for a Monday eve all taking advantage of the great offer, and would be lovely for a romantic date, a weekday birthday or cosy dinner with friends. I'd like to come again and sample the full menu, along with their cocktails as I'm a big fan of their sister restaurant Wig & Pen.

Bonfire Night - The Fat Cat
Kelham Island is one of my favourite places to go in Sheffield, the pubs are sweet and are always filled with friendly locals, students and after work drinkers, looking for some of the locally brewed ale. The Fat Cat was our pub of choice for the bonfire and fireworks. We sampled their toffee apple and strawberry cider with friends and enjoyed some traditional bonfire night parkin, with a decent bonfire and a simple firework display!

I was a little gutted we weren't allowed sparklers, but we more than made up for it when we got home!

And so for the weather to get even colder and the visiting of the seasonal Christmas markets begins. Bring on the mulled cider, steins and shnitzel....
