Barry - old man by name, cool cafe by nature - High St, Northcote

Having landed in Melbourne five weeks ago, I quickly discovered something... Melbourne residents are ADDICTED to coffee. And I mean seriously addicted.

On the first few tries of a Melbourne cup of Joe, I found my eyes zooming in and out, speaking quickly and given a raging boost of energy. Exactly what the world keeps saying is bad for us but a caffeine kick is great in my opinion.

I saw Barry on my first drive home from the airport. Spotting the exposed brick work a mile off I added it to the long list of lunch joints to try whilst here.

My friend and I had the pleasure of sampling the food at Barry on High Street last week after a short cycle from our house. We both went for the recommended veggie burger special for $17 dollars, around 10 GBP. It may seem steep but the burger was full of natural goodies on toasted bread with a beet salad and its fairly average for lunch in Oz.

My friend had the peanut butter shake which I was totally jealous of when it arrived in a large jam jar style glass with handle and I took a latte (coffee I have now got used to).

The customers were a combination of young professionals with the day off, business meetings and mother's with children. Everyone was relaxed and chatting, with a buzzy atmosphere.

The service was great and food delicious so we will definitely be heading back for a Sunday brunch or afternoon long lunch with friends. Plus the cakes looked lush!

My favourite bit about Barry was definitely the decor, white exposed brick work, wooden benches and steel shelving with a few green pot plants chucked in.
