Dance 'til the cows come home - Farm Fest 2013

26 - 27 July 2013 saw the return of Farm Festival in Somerset which started 8 years ago with a group of friends bringing people together for a great time. Focusing on what they wanted out of a festival rather than media hype and high ticket prices, Farm Festival has grown from a few friends on a farm to an amazing 4500 people this year.

I was lucky enough to have a mutual friend who organises the festival, who let me head down to Gilcombe Farm in Bruton, a wee village outside of Glastonbury, for the weekend to volunteer.

Volunteering at a festival is a great idea if you want to get the festival experience on a budget, you may have to leave a deposit but get a full weekends camping as part of the experience and a balance between both working, meeting new people and seeing the festival.

The festival consists of a main stage, a DJ tent, a band tent and a not so secret club with food, beer and clothing stalls scattered around the field and childrens tents to entertain the kids. This year saw the likes of Ghostpoet, Art Brut, Black Strobe and Mt Wolf perform to a versatile crowd of young friends, older friends and families of all ages.

Everything is so well thought out at this intimate festival, from the bands and DJ's who play, the children's activities, decor in the tents and the local produce being served at the food stalls and bars. Socks were well and truly blown off after a couple of Somerset's finest Black Rat cider and it's always great to know you are buying produce locally sourced in the area. The camping, car park and main field are all within 5 minutes walk of each other, making it easy to get around.

While the Friday was an absolute scorcher the Saturday was a bit of a wash out. It didn't dampen anyone's spirits though, with the infamous hat parade still taking place despite the weather.

The festival was a real experience and couldn't happen without the dedication from the staff and organisers, plus the volunteers. I was so pleased to be part of the team this year.
